2005_U_17 Resolution to ratify the Golan Heights Economic Corporation |
| |
| |
The Golan Heights remains an active political dispute as the land is currently held by occupation by Israel. While representing a strategic land mass asset as the highest ground within the region, it is also a primary source of water and therefore life for the region. |
| |
As such, it is against the better interests of Israel to withdraw from military occupation if only to be subject to greater military threat and economic threat through a lack of access to water. |
| |
Therefore a stale mate exists whereby the dispute territory remains a flash point for conflict at any moment. |
| |
Separating the economics from the politics |
| |
Unlike other territorial disputes, the Golan Heights dispute has a significant economic elements- that is the safe and regular supply of water to nearby communities. It also represents an area of supremely important ecology. Therefore, the ideal solution is potentially an economic one, rather than a military one. |

The Golan Heights Economic Corporation |
| |
Effectively, the Golan Heights Economic Corporation is a joint venture between Israel and Syria. It then is given the long term lease rights (150 years) to manage the water supply and management as well as security of the area. |
| |
In exchange, Israel withdraws its occupation of the area and Syria has its sovereign land returned. |
